This portrait is of my friend Polina, whom I met on the Isle of Wight. During the sittings we sometimes talked, and sometimes she simply sat quietly, turned inward. That second state interested me most. I wanted to capture her inner world – a sense of softness, femininity, and thoughtfulness. For me, the likeness is less important than conveying the mood and emotional presence.
