Biography
Mark paints in oils, working with perhaps just four or five colours. His subjects are abstract and semi-abstract land and sea-scapes. He works to communicate the physical restlessness and emotion he feels is present as a continuously shifting intensity within a scene. As such, achievement for him is when all of the viewer’s senses are engaged as they look at the work. He wants them to hear and feel as well as see so that what they experience is something almost filmic; it’s never still, never quiet. He works with a palette knife and rag or fingers to blend and drag the paint. Strands of rope fibre or ground-down coloured slate, charcoal or sea-salt may be added to add texture. At times he’ll use a knife to scrape or gouge the work to create lines of movement and dynamic.
