Biography
Born in Portugal, Helena always wanted to expand her experiences beyond Helena's place of birth. After the first two years of a four-year Visual Arts BA (Hons), Helena decided to move to the UK and finish her course in Manchester where she was able to develop a self-directed artistic practice and take part in a number of professional exhibitions. Having recently moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne Helena will be starting a masters in Art Museum and Gallery Studies. As well as, pursuing a career as a curator Helena wants to continue developing her artwork. Helena's work is a portrayal of personal memories and the objects that convey them. Using the malleable qualities of oil paint Helena explores her mother’s love for the family home and the effort with which she organises each room. To do so Helena uses an intuitive process that explores the relationship between the different decorative objects placed around her home in Portugal. In Helena's paintings, these objects appear simplified, which results in something that is neither abstract nor figurative. Even though most of Helena's work is based around personal objects she is open to develop paintings around other people’s personal memories and belongings.

Helena is a very talented and wonderful artist. She has now made me 3 absolutely beautiful paintings. Helena was fantastic. I had very fixed thoughts about what I wanted. Helena listened but then made the brief her own. What I ended up with was so much better than anything I could have imagined. It had all the parts I wanted but then lots of extras I would never have thought of. I am in love with the end result and very grateful. Helena was very easy to work with despite my continued changing of the brief and designs. She took my thoughts into account but did not let me ruin my own brief! The fact that she rated me as 4 stars for flexibility (I am a control freak) shows how patient she is.
